Remember when I looked at the Pooh’s Adventures spinoff Alex’s Adventures of Mickey’s Magical Christmas, with the video getting deleted shortly after I wrote that review? Well, they have’t reuploaded the whole special, but they have reuploaded the Alex’s Christmas Carol segment. Here’s what I said about this bit:
They introduce a version of Mickey’s Christmas Carol that’s far from unedited. Yes, they took the audio of Mickey’s version of the Christmas classic and dubbed it over several other cartoons to make Alex’s Christmas Carol. So now Mr. Krabs from Spongebob is Scrooge and many other characters are playing the roles. The animals that have invaded this special play the Ghosts, for example. Gotta hand it to LionKingRulez, the credits do a good job of matching that of the original’s. But the script wasn’t by LionheartCaptain, it was by Burny Mattinson, Tony L. Marino, Ed Gombert, Don Griffith, Alan Young and Alan Dineheart according to Wikipedia.
The editing of this bit leaves much to be desired, however. It actually does use some visual clips of the original Mickey’s Christmas Carol so we actually see Scrooge McDuck and not Mr.Krabs walking down the streets of London at the beginning. The lip-synching between the audio and the visuals isn’t that bad, but they keep reusing the same clips too much.
Anyway, Alex and Marty from Madagascar play Mickey and Donald and Timon and Pumbaa are the charity guys. I love a good redub video as much as the next nerd, but the voices given to these characters don’t sound natural coming out of their mouths, nor is it hilarious coming out of their mouths. Still, they do overlay some snow during a Spongebob clip, to make it look just a tiny bit fitting for the story. And Patrick is Marley. That’s an odd casting choice, though Goofy’s voice fits Patrick well, which is more than can be said about most characters here.
Soon, Leo appears as Jiminy Cricket as the Ghost of Christmas Past. It’s a drawing of him in Cricket’s togs, and it doesn’t look half bad either. They even drew him holding onto Mr Krabs and animated him flying Krabs over to his past. Such wasted effort.
So Louis from Princess and the Frog is Fezziwig. I must admit, they made some good choices of clips during this scene. Then it’s all ruined with some bad voice acting from the creator, and Mr. Krabs doing a musical number for some reason.
Benny is Christmas Present, and we get a pretty nice drawing of him holding Mr. Krabs. The drawing’s mouths don’t move when dialogue is laid over them, but it’s not as annoying as when the clips flap their mouths and no dialogue comes out. Then they animate a drawing of the beast walking down the streets by bobbing him up and down Mr. Magoo style. The animation on the original drawings is far from stellar, but they work better here than the actual moving clips do. And Simba is Tiny Tim.
Oh, they actually found a clip where Krabs is in a graveyard. Christmas Future shows up, and has his hood down, which kinda ruins the whole big reveal thing at the end. Still, actually genuinely good choice of clips here. Krabs next to a gravestone, Alex and family mourning…
And then Mr. Krabs wakes up. Krabs is pasted into a screenshot from Mickey’s Christmas Carol all covered in MS Paint globs. The artwork was doing so well, and now we have this poorly-manipulated Krabs. What the hell, man? Krabs even grows huge and loses his legs when he grabs his cane.
Christ, Krab continues to be a disembodied head with arms, even when giving away blobs with Golden Nuggets cereal inside. It’s terrifying. But he does change into McDuck for a while.
Geez, just look at Alex’s MS Paint costume. And where did most of Simba’s body go? No wonder he’s dying.
